The Canucks continue to dominate the battle of Calgary, beating the Mustangs 6-2 on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs and Canucks would play a very defensive first half of the opening frame. Just over 10 minutes into the first Zack Russell would break in and be stopped but Dalton Ossman (assists to Zach Russell and Scott Nicholson @10:07) would pounce on the rebound to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. A little later Jordan McConnell (assist to Parker Ward @16:54) snapped a rebound under Mustangs (starting) goaltender Michael Barabash. Just 42 seconds after that Jordan McConnell would set up Parker Ward (assists to Jordan McConnell and Josh Giacomin @17:36) who would slap the puck into the back of the goal. Shots favored the Canucks 14-6 in the opening period. The Mustangs would go 0/3 on the power play while the Canucks were 0/1.
The Canucks would tack on two more goals in the second to add to their lead. Jordan McConnell (assists to Parker Ward and Mark Drohan @12:26) would take a centering pass from Ward and wire the puck into the back of the net. The Mustangs would have a glorious opportunity to get on the board with a three on one but Canucks (starting) goaltender Logan Drackett would stand his ground. Seconds later Zach Russell (assists to Dalton Ossman and Braydon Jenkins @16:33) would get sprung on a breakaway and beat Barabash to make it 5-0. That would be the end of the night for the Mustangs starter who would give up five goals on 27 shots. The Canucks would outshoot the Mustangs 14-8 in the second and 28-14 in the hockey game. The Mustangs would go 0/1 (0/4 after 2) on the power play while the Canucks (0/1 after 2) didn't receive a man advantage in the second.
Gage Joel (assist to Nathan Walker @2:40) would sneak a shot under the arm of Drackett to get the Mustangs on the board. The two clubs would then exchange power play goals. Ben Assad (assists to Matthew Painchaud and Brett Van Os @8:27) would be left all alone at the side of the net and jam the rebound into the net. On a five on three Sine Chadi (assists to Blaise Arkle and Brock Sottile @13:12) would pounce on the loose puck and turn on the red light to cut the deficit to 6-2. That would be as close as the Stangs would get. Shots were 15-13 Canucks in the third and 43-27 in the hockey game. The Mustangs would go 1/3 (1/7 in the game) on the power play in the third while the Canucks were 1/2 (1/3 in the game) with the man advantage.
The boys in blue and gold travel Northeast to Lloydminster and Bonnyville on Friday and Saturday night.
