Cole Hayward had a magnificent performance making 44 saves, but the offense failed to find their legs in a 6-0 loss to the Canmore Eagles on opening night.
Things looked positive to start as the Mustangs would get the first shot on goal and then would kill off their first penalty of the game shortly after that. Unfortunately, for Calgary things will fall off the rails midway through the opening frame. Braden Saretsky (assists to Colby Livingstone and Nolan Kurylo @ 8:58) would bury the rebound after Cole Hayward stopped Livingstone on a two on one. Logan Ferguson (assists to Coy Prevost and Adamu Tanaka @11:06) would be the trailer on a three on two and put the perfect shot over the shoulder of Hayward to give Canmore a 2-0 lead. Hayward would probably like the third goal back as Daylan Marchi (assists to Brett Stewart and Matt Forchuk @15:47) would get a shorthanded breakaway and slip the puck between the pads of the Mustang starter. Shots favored the Eagles 15-7 in the opening frame. Calgary would go 0/3 on the power play while Canmore was 0/2.
Cole Hayward would steal the show in the second period making 20 saves. The Best of the stops came during one of Calgary's four power plays against as Hayward would dive across the crease to rob Braden Saretsky of a sure goal to keep the game 3-0. The Mustangs would continue to play with fire and with 0.9 seconds left Matt Forchuk (assists to Colton Young and Coy Prevost @20:00) ripped a one timer just over the blocker of Hayward to make it 4-0 Eagles after two periods. Shots favored Canmore 21-7 in the second and 36-14 in the hockey game. The Eagles went 1/4 on the power play in the second and were 1/6 in the hockey game while the Mustangs were 0/2 in the second and 0/4 in the game.
Logan Ferguson (assists to Colton Young and Matt Forchuk @2:29) would get his second of the night driving a shot under the arm of Hayward on the power play to extend the lead to 5-0. Canmore capped off the scoring with another power play marker courtesy of Matt Forchuk (Brett Stewart and Logan Ferguson @19:32) scored his second of the night with a shot from the point. Shots favored the Eagles 14-9 in the third and 50-23 in the hockey game. Canmore would finish the game 3/9 on the power play while Calgary was 0/8.
The boys in blue and gold are back on the road in Brooks on Saturday (September 17th) night at 7:00.
