First period firepower is all Drumheller needs to rock Mustangs 6-2.
For the second time this week the Mustangs entered the first intermission down by four goals. Just over two minutes into the game Evan Rochowiak (assist to Brett Campbell @2:18) would get a couple of whacks at the puck and tap it between the pads of Mustangs (starting) goaltender Cole Hayward. Hayward would then like the second goal back moments later as Brayden Nicholetts (assist to Jeff Fasegha and Stefan Wood @3:33) would float a shot toward the net that would sneak past the right pad of the Mustang netminder. Brett Campbell (assists to Evan Rochowiak and Alexander Leonidas @5:26) would then get a fortuitous bounce off of Kylor Wall and behind Hayward to make it 3-0 Dragons. That would spell the short end for the Mustangs goaltender. Bailey Brkin would get a rude welcome to the game as on the power play, Stefan Wood (assists to Evan Tschumi and Brett Campbell @8:27) point shot made it through a maze of bodies. Brady Risk (assists to Clay Keeley and Markus Boguslavsky @14:37) would be left all alone in the slot and make no mistake beating (backup) Brkin who would get injured trying to stretch for the save. Calgary would get on the board just over a minute later as Jordan Xavier (assists to Yuri Chernichko and Mathew Popowich @15:48) would find the loose puck and chip it over Dragons (starting) goaltender Dane Dow. Shots favored Drumheller 16-9 in the opening frame. Drumheller went 1/2 on the power play in the first while Calgary was 0/1.
The Mustangs would get plenty of opportunities in the second period but couldn't find a way to beat Dane Dow. The boys in blue and gold would get four odd man rushes (3-0, 2-0, 2-1, 1-0) but could only muster two shots on goal. Shots favored the Mustangs 17-7 in the second and 26-23 in the hockey game. Calgary would go 0/1 on the power play in the second while the Dragons were 0/4.
Brady Risk (assist to Jeff Fasegha @7:05) would get his second of the night when he rolled a shot between the pads of Hayward to make it 6-1. Calgary would get that goal back on the power play, Jordan Xavier (assist to Kylor Wall @12:35) got his second of the night when he drove down the wing and picked the far post on Dow. Shots favored the Mustangs 11-6 in the third and 37-29 in the hockey game. Calgary would finish the game 1/4 on the power play while Drumheller went 1/6.
The boys in blue and gold will try to turn things around on Tuesday night when they host the Okotoks Oilers.
