WEEKEND PREVIEW: Mustangs back at home for their weekend matches

Calgary, AB – Calgary looks to get back into the win column after a tight loss.


Powerplay: 15.23% (12th)   Penalty Kill: 79.64% (14th)
Last 5 Games: 3-2

The Mustangs are coming off a close 3-1 loss to the Canmore Eagles, and look to get back to winning as they try and look to climb up the standings for the playoff, and so far into the month of January, the Mustangs have won four of their six games. Calgary is back in action Thursday night when the Drayton Valley Thunder come into town.

Player to Watch: Jackson Salt was named the Canalta Hotels AJHL Player of the Week with seven points (2G, 5A) in three games last week. Salt also has ten points in six games in the Month of January and had a monster of game chipping in on a goal and three assists in an 11-3 Victory over the Lloydminster Bobcats on Jan. 12th.


Thursday, Jan. 17th vs Drayton Valley Thunder
Powerplay: 12.32 % (14th)   Penalty Kill: 83.05% (9th)

Season Series vs the Mustang: 1-0

Coming off a win against the Calgary Canucks, the Thunder look to get a streak going on the second night of a back to back.  Drayton Valley is 4-2-1 so far into the month of January and will try to improve that record against a Mustangs team they beat 2-1 way back in October.

Player to Watch: Rookie Defenseman Brett Bamber had 2 assists in his last game, a 3-1 win over the Calgary Canucks.  Bamber has 5 points in 21 games, all in the form of assists, and looks to snag his first points against the Mustangs.


Friday, Jan. 18th @ Olds Grizzlys
Powerplay: 10.48% (16th)   Penalty Kill: 75.10% (15th)
Last 5 Games: 0-5
Season Series vs the Mustang: 0-4

A team that’s been having a rough year will be looking for a win after dropping their last nine games. This will be the fifth meeting between these two teams, with the four previous having gone to the Mustangs. They will meet once more to end of the month of January at Father David Bauer Arena.

Player to Watch: Rookie Forward Hunter Floris has formed a start of a point streak of three games for himself, with two goals and two assets in those games. Floris also has one goal and four assists in three games against the Mustangs this season.


Sunday, Jan 20th vs Sherwood Park Crusaders
Powerplay: 24.77% (3rd)   Penalty Kill: 85.79% (2nd)
Last 5 Games: 4-1
Season Series vs the Mustang: 1-0

This will be the second date this month between the Crusaders and the Mustangs, with the previous match resulting in a 4-3 win for the hosting Crusaders at Sherwood Park Arena on Jan. 11th. The Crusaders are a strong team that lead the North Division and have only lost eight games in regulation; Sherwood Park is also on a three-game win streak.

Player to Watch: Crusaders Goaltender Matt Berlin has won his last 3 starts and sits in second place in the league with 21 wins. The 20-year-old has a .923 save percentage, 2.35 goals against average and 2 shutouts. Berlin has the win in the Crusaders only meeting with the Mustangs this season.
