WEEKEND PREVIEW: Mustangs look to finish off long road trip in style

Calgary, AB – The Mustangs come into 2019 strong hoping to extend win streak to seven and look to end their 5-game road trip on a perfect note.


Powerplay: 15.68% (12th)            Penalty Kill: 78.85% (14th)   
Last 5 Games: 5-0

The Mustangs have won their last 7 games and have scored 5 or more goals in 9 straight games. Calgary looks to cap off the last two games of their road trip with wins against the Sherwood Park Crusaders and the Lloydminster Bobcats, before heading home for a Tuesday night date with the Canmore Eagles.

Player to Watch: Joseph Karpyshyn was named the Alberta Ford Dealers AJHL Player of the Month for December. The 20-year-old forward has 8 points in his last 5 games and lead the Mustangs this season with 49 points and scoring at a rate of 1.2 points per game. Karpyshyn is 4 points shy of tying his total points from last season with 20 games remaining.


Friday, Jan. 11 @ Sherwood Park Crusaders

Powerplay: 24.40% (3rd)            Penalty Kill: 85.96% (1st)   
Last 5 Games: 3-2
Season Series vs the Mustangs: 0-0

This will be the first matchup between the Crusaders and the Mustangs this season, the second and last meeting for these two teams will happen later this month on Sunday, Jan. 20  at Father David Bauer Arena. This will be a tough match for the Mustangs as the Crusaders are the second ranked team in the league and are coming of a lose, the Crusaders will be coming out strong as they try and bounce back with a win.

Player to Watch: Garrett Clegg, sits in third in the league in scoring with 25 goals and also leads his team with 52 points this season. The Crusaders winger is on a 12-game point streak with 20 points on that streak. Clegg had 3 points in 2 meetings against the Mustangs last season.


Saturday, Jan. 12 @ Lloydminster Bobcats

Powerplay: 10.50% (16th)            Penalty Kill: 80.71% (11th)   
Last 5 Games: 1-4
Season Series vs the Mustangs: 0-2

The Bobcats look to try and grab a win, after dropping three straight games after picking up their first win of 2019. This will be the third meeting of the season between these two teams, with the Mustangs winning the last two meetings and have outscored the Bobcats 10-3 in those two games.

Player to Watch:  Rookie Hunter Lamb leads his team with 11 goals and sits in second on his team with 24 points. Lamb has 3 points in his last 3 games and looks to get his first points against the Mustangs


Tuesday, Jan. 15 vs Canmore Eagles 

Powerplay: 24.89% (2nd)            Penalty Kill 79.37% (13th)   
Last 5 Games: 1-4
Season Series vs the Mustangs: 1-3

Tuesday’s night game will be a rescheduled from October, 2 from when a snow storm made travel impossible for the visiting’s Eagles. The Eagles have two games verses the Olds Grizzlys and the Calgary Canucks before heading to Father David Bauer Arena on Tuesday. The last meeting between these two teams happened on December 2, where the Mustangs edged the Eagles in a 5-4 win at the Canmore Recreation Centre.

Player to Watch: Alternate Captain Mark Drohan leads the defence on his team with 41 points. The 20-year-old also leads his team in assists with 34  and has 3 points in his last 2 games. Drohan has 10 points in 4 games against the Mustangs this season.
