WEEKEND PREVIEW: Mustangs in a battle for playoff position heading into February

Calgary, AB – The Mustangs head into the new month with three big division games over the weekend.


Powerplay: 14.93% (12th) Penalty Kill: 79.35 (12th)
Last 5 Games: 3-2

The Calgary Mustangs hit the road for a date with the Okotoks Oilers before coming home for games against two more division rivals, all of whom sit in front of the Mustangs in the standings. The Mustangs are coming off a 7-0 Victory over the Olds Grizzlys on Tuesday night, after dropping their previous two games.

Player to Watch: Keep your eye on import Defensemen Noah Kim, who joined the Mustangs in January and already has 6 points in 8 games this season. The 18-year-old had 6 points in 18 games with the Austin Bruins of the NAHL.


Friday, February 1 @ Okotoks Oilers

Powerplay: 19.07% (9th) Penalty Kill: 85.43 (2nd)
Last 5 Games: 5-0
Season Series vs the Mustangs: 4-0

The Okotoks Oilers are rolling as they currently ride a ten-game winning streak and only have lost only one game in their last seventeen games. This will be the last time the Calgary will meet the Okotoks this season with the Oilers winning the last four, outscoring the Mustangs 16-9. The Oilers sit 11 points ahead of the Mustangs.

Player to Watch: Forward Quinn Olson is riding a point streak of 18 games with 31 points in those games. Olson had 2 points in the last game against the Mustangs and a total on 9 in 3 games against Calgary.


Sunday, February 3 vs. Camrose Kodiaks

Season Series vs the Mustangs: 2-2

The Camrose Kodiaks are coming off a shutout 3-0 win over Spruce Grove Saints and would like to snag another win as they sit one spot ahead of the Mustangs in the standings. This will be the fourth of five meetings between Calgary and Camrose, both teams have won two games apiece. The Kodiaks host the Calgary Canucks on Saturday before heading to Father David Bauer for Sunday’s game.

Player to Watch: Goaltender Griffin Bowerman is coming off his third shutout win of the season and sits in first with his .931 Save Percentage and holds a 2.27 Goals Against Average. The Camrose goalie will look to grab his first win against Calgary this season, as he has lost in his two meetings with the Mustangs.


Thursday, February 7 vs. Drumheller Dragons

Powerplay: 20.70% (5th) Penalty Kill: 84.46 (7th)
Last 5 Games: 2-3
Season Series vs the Mustangs: 2-1

The Drumheller Dragons look to bounce back this weekend with wins over the Calgary Canucks and the red-hot Brooks Bandits before they heading to Father David Bauer Arena for Thursdays match up with the Mustangs. The Dragons sit two points ahead of Mustangs in the standings.

Player to Watch: Forward Brett Edwards leads his team with 26 goals and 49 points. The 20-year-old has 5 points in his last 5 games. Edwards has 0 points in 3 games against the Mustangs this season but looks to change that as his team tries to stay ahead in the standings.
